PARIA CANYON
The Paria Canyon is a beautiful deep red-rock canyon that ends at Lees Ferry on the Colorado River. Backpackers hike the entire 37-mile length of the canyon. On this day-hike you will explore the upper part of the canyon. You start at the Paria Canyon - Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness Ranger Station on Hwy 89 where you have to buy a day hiking permit (currently $5 per person). Then you drive 2 miles on a dirt road to the White House campground and trailhead. The trail runs in the riverbed and you have to cross the river many times. In dry periods you can cross the river by stepping on exposed rocks without getting your boots wet. Beware of the risk of flash floods during the months of summer. As you go downstream the canyon gets deeper and deeper. Hike as far as your condition allows.
