HORSESHOE BEND near PAGE, AZ

Start with a short hike off Highway 89 at the Mile 545 marker just south of Page to the rim of Glen Canyon where the Colorado River makes a sharp u-turn referred to as Horseshoe Bend. The view is outstanding. The distance from the parking area to the rim is only about 0.5 M. If you want to walk some more there is a neat canyon close to Horseshoe Bend that is not widely known. I have been there quite often and never met anybody. It is called Ninemile Draw. You find it by walking north from the Horseshoe Bend viewpoint, staying away from the rim. After about half a mile you will drop down into a redrock canyon that gets deeper as you walk downstream. The walls reach a height of several hundred feet as you come to a deep dropoff from where you can just catch a glimpse of the Colorado River through the mouth of canyon. To get a better view you can climb out of the canyon on the right hand side, at a point just upstream of a narrow passage full of scrub oaks. Walk along the rim of Ninemile Draw to the edge of Glen Canyon and enjoy the views. It is rough terrain, but very pretty with many interesting red-rock formations.
